Rabbits make great pets, but also come with responsibilities. Are you prepared to bunny proof an area of your home? Rabbits need an hour of playtime outside their cage per day. Does your schedule allow for playtime?
Bunnies will eat your things, chew your woodwork & dig holes in your carpeting. I’ve lost countless phone/watch chargers in a matter of seconds. Bunnies don’t understand importance or cost of items we have in our homes – they see it, they chew it (or pee on it). Make sure you supervise your rabbit whenever it is out of the cage. It’s also important to make sure that any other pets in the home cannot catch or injure your bunny while out. We have a designated “rabbit room” in our house. They will potty on the carpeting – so be prepared to clean up after playtime. You can purchase a large metal playpen and lay down a sheet for easier cleanup. Provide toys and activities for them during playtime. Paper towel rolls, pine cones, wooden blocks & cardboard are inexpensive or no cost items they will enjoy. Can you imagine spending 24 hours a day cooped up in a cage? Rabbits can become aggressive if they don’t get the exercise and attention they need. There are many creative ideas on Pinterest or your local pet store will have an assortment of fun things to do. Bunnies shouldn’t be kept from water or feed for more than an hour. One hour of playtime is more than enough – young rabbits can become hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and die. Rabbits prefer to eat alone in quite, so they may not snack when food is offered in the play area.
